Omar Boudib, a Senegalese, has built the newly inaugurated ice Plant at the Brufut Community Fishing centre which is expected to bring to light reduction in the rate of post harvest fisheries in the country. This new ice plant has a capacity of 20 tonnes of fresh fish. Permanent secretary, ministry of Fisheries, Water Resources and National Assembly Matters, Lamin Nyabally, presided over the official inauguration of the facility.
Nyabally commended Omar and his family for coming up with the idea of building such ice plant in The Gambia. He told that this facility will immensely contribute towards the fight against hunger. The facility is not only to benefit those in Brufut but even people engaged in fishing within the satelite villages of Brufut. The majority of Gambia’s fishing centres have over the past years encounterd difficulities in terms of storing their fish cathches before reaching to the market.
It is informed that the Brufut Community Fishing centre was established in 1990 previously with thirty stalls, but according to Nfamara Dampha, director of Fisheries, there is now massive increment of stalls to fifty-eight. The Kombo North National Assembly member, Adama Cham, was also with the belief that not only the people of the area will benefit from the facility but the country at large.
