Golden perch, a firm favourite for many freshwater fishers, are on the bite with gusto after the recent downpours. As per Jenny Keys, Stocked Impoundment Coordinator, this is the right time to buy a Stocked Impoundment Permit (SIP) and hit the dams. She informed that good reports are in from fishers at Glenlyon dam, who are catching lots of good sized golden perch. The season of heavy rains help to catch the golden perch easily as they are available in abundant and haning around the edge of the dam to feed.
She also informed that as the water levels rise, the fish move up into the grass and weeds around the fringes of the dam to gorge on the breeding shrimp that live in the undergrowth. She told that the best chance to catch the golden perch is by fishing in about 12-13 ft of water in the flooded grass. Barramundi are just about to take off too, as are most of the freshwater species as the water temperature is warming up and the fish are becoming active.
The dams in Murray Darling Region, South East Queensland, Burnett Region and the like are full with the stocks of golden perch. According to Keys the anglers needed a permit to fish in any of these dams. She told that for just $7 you can fish for a week but for only $35 you can buy an annual permit and fish all year round knowing you are contributing to the upkeep of the local fish stocking program.
