There is some brisk fishing for capelin off Snæfellsnes right now, and capelin roe production is in full swing at several processing plants in Iceland as the season still shows no sign of coming to an end.
HB Grandi’s pelagic vessel Venus is now landing 1600 to 1700 tonnes at Akranes where it will be processed for roe extraction and freezing.
‘We shot first thing in the morning and we had a decent amount for roe production in three shots,’ said skipper Guðlaugur Jónsson when Venus was on its way to Akranes .
He said that there is a large volume of capelin on the grounds, and he is sure that this amount is growing.
‘I haven’t heard any mention of a western migration so far, but it ought to show up as in previous years. This season should last another ten days. I don’t believe it’ll be any shorter than that,‘ he said.
Síladvinnslan’s fleet is also fishing off the west of Iceland and its capelin roe production is in progress at both Helguvík and Neskaupstaður.
The Neskaupstaður factory has finished processing a landing by Börkur and is now working on fish landed by Margrét. Pelagic vessel Hákon was also due to start discharging yesterday and Beitir is on its way eastwards to land.
At Helguvík a landing by Vilhelm Thorsteinsson has been processed and Greenlandic pelagic vessel Polar Amaroq was next in line to land capelin there for roe production.
