The career of Darren Guard has gone a major change for the sake of safety reason. His involvement with FishSafe, an industry and government partnership designed to promote safety in the commercial fishing industry with which he is involved. It is said that Guard will help with education and training for commercial vessels on health and safety and safe-ship management.
Experts said that this was a natural progress for a man who has spent a lifetime on the sea, some may wonder what provoked the move into the bureaucracy. Guard expressed that his role was about helping those in the industry understand what their responsibilities were, pitching it to them in a relevant and coherent way. He told that he is the bridge between bureaucracy and the guy in the field. He said that there are not many people who are in that role and that is part of the problem.
Guard has had to give up his roles on the executive of the New Zealand Federation of Commercial Fishermen and with the Port Nelson Fishermen’s Association. He has also stepped away from Guards Fisheries, which has been taken over by a friend in Auckland who owned half the business with him.
