According to reports published by News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) the state government had acquired five fishing trawlers and leased them to Vijons Nigeria Limited, a local maritime company, under a partnership. Briggs_Kuro Tamuno, Special Adviser to Gov. Chibuike Amaechi on Aquaculture and Deep_Sea Fishing, has revealed this information.
He said that this partnership will allow Vijons to use the trawlers for fishing and training of indigenous fishermen. Tamuno added 63 indigenes of the state had been engaged by Vijons as crewmen to test_run some of the trawlers. He further said that the partnership was not only to provide job opportunities to indigenes but to enhance the government’s revenue.
The River State Government is committed to provide jobs to its people in this tough economic situation as the government equally reasoned that investment in this sector would further enhance its revenue generation. Tamuno said the government hoped to realise N40 million monthly from the venture. It is expected that the government might acquire more trawlers if the pioneer team showed commitment and transparency in the venture.
