Bernard Généreux, Member of Parliament for Montmagny, on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today announced that the Government of Canada will invest $4.6 million for repair and improvement projects at small craft harbours in coastal communities throughout Quebec. He told that commercial fish harvesters of Quebec need a functional and accessible network of small craft harbours to help them make a living.
According to him this investment would testify government intention to improve harbours so that those who depend on the fishery will have reliable infrastructure and a stronger local economy for years to come. Across Canada, the Small Craft Harbours Program is investing $67 million to revitalize small craft harbours and support the livelihood of those Canadians who depend on them.
Généreux informed that the investment is provided by Canada’s Economic Action Plan, which provides $200 million for two years for harbour repairs and maintenance projects. Small craft harbour repair and improvement projects are undertaken by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, as part of its Small Craft Harbours Program, in cooperation with the local harbour authorities that manage and operate facilities for local users.
