According to the Minister for Primary Industries and Water, David Llewellyn, has praised Spring Bay Seafoods Pty Ltd on its accreditation as a Friend of the Sea. He added that Spring Bay Seafoods underwent a comprehensive audit late last year to qualify for this certification which can now be used on all the company’s marketing material.
Llewellyn revealed that Friend of the Sea is a registered non-profit, non-government organisation established to conserve marine habitat and resources through market incentives and specific conservation projects. He also states that it is the world’s most recognized aquaculture sustainability standard.
It is found that Spring Bay Seafoods is the first Tasmanian company to be certified as a Friend of the Sea and is only the second in Australia to achieve this status. The company is the world’s second mussel company to gain this prestigious accreditation after the Europe-based Galician Mussel Industry Association that produces around 240,000 tonnes of mussels annually.
Llewellyn said that the company was recognized for its low-density mussel farming and hatchery production of juvenile mussel spat. He added that Spring Bay’s blue mussels are rope-cultured deepwater mussels grown on unique suspended long-lines between 6 to 10 metres below the surface.
