The Provider, last big fishing boat, is waiting for right funding for the restoration and running of the boat. If fails the boat is expected to be sent to the scrap heap and burnt. Supporters for The Provider hope to raise the funds needed for refurbishment and see the boat turned into a floating classroom. Now the future of the Provider, built by the Oliver’s Yard in the 1950s, was discovered by Carol Williams, who has followed the career of the boat since she was a little girl.
After the completion the boat has been left on a building site while it was decided what to do with her. Ted Gundry, chairman of the Porthleven Development Trust, hopes that tomorrow’s meeting will help decide what to do with The Provider. He added that the meeting will determine what interest there is in having a committee to restore The Provider.
He hopes that there will be a fair amount of people who come as we will need that enthusiasm to carry us through. The Provider is considered sailable though it has been damaged over the years and is in need of refurbishment. Gundry informed that if The Provider was restored its future would open up opportunities for everyone. He noticed that one idea is there to turn the boat into a floating classroom for Helston Community College, or we would make The Provider available to the public.
