Tuticorin is emerging as the biggest seafood exporter in Tamil Nadu. The company said that resumption of fishing operations by mechanised boats after a gap of 22 days has started showing a positive trend for seafood industries here. The resumption has argued well for fish vendors, consumers, hoteliers, proprietors of ice plants, fish processing units and others who depend on it.
Fishermen were ecstatic after netting a huge catch of fish through the night of Saturday. Hectic commercial activities of buying and selling at fishing harbour has showed good signs of recovery in terms of revenue. S. Lawrence, a fisherman said that they had good catch of cuttle and squid fish (kanavai). These are mainly meant for export. Besides quality ones, fish of small in size and low value was also netted. Out of 227 mechanised boats, 212 ventured into the sea. On an average, for a boat, a maximum revenue to the tune of Rs. 4 lakh and a minimum of Rs. 1 lakh was generated on day one.
Start of fishing operations help surviving many small scale industries like ice plant, which units stopped production folowinf suspension of fishing operations.
