According to the association the safety training course will be offered to fishermen in Valdez on Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and will be held at the Prince William Sound Community College. In a press release the association said that this course is U.S. Coast Guard approved and meets the training requirements for commercial fishing vessels.
It is told the course is open to all mariners, whether or not they fish commercially. Cost for this course is $175 or $125 for AMSEA members. It is available free to licensed commercial fishermen thanks to funding from National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health and the Coast Guard. The news release also mentioned that the mariners who know how to use onboard safety and survival equipment prior to the onset of an emergency have been proven to be effective in surviving emergencies at sea.
It is informed that during this U.S. Coast Guard-approved, marine survival equipment, procedures and onboard drills training, participants practice with emergency equipment that should be onboard any commercial fishing or other sizeable vessel — PFDs, life rafts, immersion suits, EPIRBs and fire extinguishers. Fishermen will get the chance to learn and practice emergency procedures like man overboard, abandon ship, fire fighting and flooding control.
