According to the fishing groups in Queensland say they have concerns for the future of the industry under a Labor minority government. As per the Greens, there should ban to all commercial fishing and mining exploration in the Coral Sea. An interim Coral Sea Conservation Zone was created by the previous federal government. The zone covers nearly 1 million square kilometres at the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
Wayne Bayne from Marine Queensland says he is seeking talks with the new government. He told that the ramification for regional and rural communities and regional economies like Cairns is going to be absolutely horrendous. The secretary of Fraser Coast recreational fishing group Sunfish, Martin Bellert, says he is confident they can negotiate with the new Federal Government. He added that the independents will encourage the new government to listen to recreational fishers’ concerns.
