Former Bonavista mayor and dedicated fisherman, Don Trembeltt is leaving Newfoundland after spending 28 seasons of fishing. He is heading for Alberta permanently. He taught at Marine Institute in Newfoundland and now he is making Alberta is permanent home. Tremblett hopes to return to province for vacations until he retires.
He said that he loved fishing and teaching and his decision to make a move now should be done much earlier in 1992 when the Northern Cod Moratorium was announced. Tremblett opined, “I always wanted more education, but because I spent the moratorium teaching courses to other fishermen, I never took advantage of the biggest opportunity of my life.”
He added that he never considered giving up fishing because it was a career he began when he left school and joined his father on his boat. Tremblett opined that last year he didn’t fish at all because of his medical report. Now he got the job in an oil industry in Alberta as a safety instructor but he will miss the fishing and teaching.
Commenting on the current position Tremblett said that there’s no reason he could be fishing now, but the desire isn’t there any more.
