As per the information seafood production in 2009 reached more than 4.8 million MT, increasing six-fold from 1986. Aquaculture alone soared by twenty times to more than 2.5 million MT, recording with an annual growth rate of 14 percent over the last 24 years. Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in the opening ceremony of Viet Nam Seafood Festival 2010 in Can Tho on April 24, 2010, has made a remark on the sector’s non-stop and striking growth rate.
Vietnamese seafood products have been exported to 160 countries and territories worldwide, with a value of more than US$4.2 billion, up 40 times over 1986. Seafood has become the third largest export items in Viet Nam. According to the PM Viet Nam seafood sector has a huge potential to develop; however, seafood production and trading still face numerous difficulties due to the small-scale nature of fishing, operating mainly inshore, slow-to-renovate fishing boats and gears.
Seafood increasingly becoming the booming industry in Vietnam as the production as well as the exports are rising with each passing day. Scientific and technology application in the seafood sector was dawdling and inefficient due to the lack of attention from competent agencies.
