Fishery officers from the Placentia detachment of Fisheries and Oceans Canada were conducted an inspection on the fishing vessel Selina Mary in St. Bride’s, Placentia Bay in April 2007. In that inspection it was determined through the vessel monitoring system that the owner, Anthony Barry of St. Bride’s, fished two separate crab areas at the same time, in contravention of his licence conditions.
The inspection also revealed that Barry provided a false or misleading log book for inspection. He was subsequently charged and his catch was seized. His case was presented in provincial court at Placentia in July 2008 in which Barry plead guilty and was convicted of fishing two crab areas at one time and providing false or misleading information. For that the court fined him $1250 for each charge and the value of the seized crab, $12,815.15, was forfeited.
Fishery officers from the Placentia detachment had conducted a stakeout in the Iona Islands area of Placentia Bay in November 2007. In inspection the officers used surveillance equipment and determined that Kenneth King was processing cod on board his vessel, The Lady of the Sea, in a nearby cove, in contravention of the Fisheries Act. Upon further investigation, King was also found to have failed to offload all catch as per his licence conditions, which resulted in charges and the seizure of 40 pounds of cod fillets.
In the same way the provincial court fined King $500 for each charge and the seized cod was forfeited. In June 2008 another violations of Fisheries Act came into light at Biscay Bay River when angler Corey Curtis of Trepassey was found with 24 trout in his possession, thus exceeding the daily bag limit by 12 trout. The court convicted Curtis of exceeding the daily bag limit of trout and was fined $250.
