Iceland is currently experiencing an environmental disaster affecting herring in the domestic fjords, has lost about 50,000 tonnes of herring in a short time.
Herring is rotting away, after being washed up on the inlet banks, forming a smelly layer of dead fish.
Biologists and experts suspect a very low level of oxygen in the fjord, that this is the real cause of the mass death of small herring.
The dead herring now constitute a security risk to the Icelands birdlife. The oil secreted by the herring is a great danger to birds because oil can clog their feathers and wings, leading to death.
There is therefore currently a major clean-up of manually remove herrings from the beaches, so Iceland can protect their birds.
