Prices of Whitefish at Peterhead Fish Market Scotland’s Premier fishing port were very good at the start of last week and this was due to reduced landings of around 7,373 boxes.
A number of the Scottish fishing fleets remained in harbour for part of the week as severe gales hit the North sea.
The first market of the week on Monday 31 January Ten trawlers landed a total of 4716 boxes of white fish which sold for the following prices Large Haddock £2.50, Medium £2.30, Round Haddock 75p-85p, Large Cod £2.00-£2.80, Medium £1.80-£2.50, Small £1.40-£2.00. Whiting £1.00-£1.20, Round Whiting 80p-£1.00, Lemon Sole £2.00-£4.00, Monkfish £2.00-£3.50, Coley £1.25-£1.45, Megrims £3.00-£5.00, Plaice £1.00-£2.50, Hake 75p-£1.40, Witches £1.00-£2.00 and Ling £1.50-£2.00.
Trawlers landed. Tranquillity, Guardian Angell, Norlanteen, Atlantic Challenge, MaiMai, Ryanwood, Adrone, Prevail, Radiant Star, Deeside.
The following day Tuesday saw Nine trawlers land a total of 2557 boxes of white fish which sold at Cod Large £2.00-£3.00, Medium £2.00-£2.60, No Large Haddock, Haddock Medium, £2.00-£2.20, Round Haddock £1.00, Whiting £1.00-£1.40, No Lemon Sole, Monkfish £3.00-£4.00, Coley £1.00-£1.20, NO Megrims, No Plaice, No Hake and no Witches and Ling £2.00.
Boats landed Constant Friend, Aurelia, Ocean Trust, MaiMai, Sagittarius, Ocean Venture, Castlewood, Attain, and Achieve.
On the next day’s market Wednesday saw Twelve trawlers land a total of 3016 boxes of which fish which sold for the following prices, Large Cod £2.00-£2.80, Medium £2.00-2.50, Haddock Large £2.20-£2.50, Medium £2.20-£2.50, Whiting £1.30-£1.50, Round Whiting £1.00-£1.10, No Lemon Sole, Monkfish £3.00-£4.00, Megrims £3.00-£3.50, Coley £1,00-£1.20, Plaice 60p, No Hake, Witches £2.00-£2.50 and Ling £1.60.
Trawlers landed Summer Dawn, Golden Gain, Opportunus, Ocean Reward, Demares, Avocet, Strathelliot, Headway X, Maggie M, Tranquillity (SN), Harvest Hope and Golden Sceptre.
On the Thursday market Six trawlers landed a total of 2625 boxes of white fish which sold for the following prices Cod Large £2.40-£2.80, Medium £2.10-£2.50, Haddock Large £2.20-£2.40, Medium £2.20-£2.40, Whiting £1.60-£1.80, No Lemon Sole, Monkfish £2.50-£3.80, Coley £1.30-£1.60, Megrims £1.65-£4.30, No Plaice, No Hake, Witches £2.00-£3.00 and Ling £1.70.
Trawlers landed Arcane, Aalskere, Beryl, Onward, Ocean Dawn, Courageous.
The last market of the week Friday saw Twelve trawlers land a total of 3746 boxes of white fish which sold at the following prices Large Cod £2.30-£3.00, Medium £2.30-£2.90, Large Haddock £2.30-£2.50, Medium £2.30-£2.50, Whiting £1.20-£2.00, No Lemon Sole, Monkfish £2.50-£3.80, Coley £1.40-£1.60, No Megrims, Plaice 60p-£1.00, No Hake, Witches 70p-£3.00 and Ling £1.50-£1.70.
Trawlers landed Benarkle, Viking Monarch, Celestial Dawn, Amity, Heather Sprig, Archturus (INS) Rosemount, Maracestina, Ocean Harvest, Favonius, Carina and Harvester.
At Peterhead 49 trawlers landings for the over totalled 16,600 boxes of whitefish,. There were four pelagic landings of Mackerel.
At Ullapool it was a quite week because of the bad weather with Five Spanish liner/netters landing a total of 107 tonnes of mixed fish, while Two Scottish Crabbers landed 18 tonnes of brown crab. The local fishing fleets was not out due to severe weather conditions.
At Fraserburgh landings or consignments from 71 boats for a weekly total of 3,321 boxes of white fish which sold for fair prices.
At Scrabster Harbour Nine boats landed a total 2383 boxes of whitefish which sold for fair prices.
At Pittenweem Harbour, Fife’s main fishing port none of the local prawn fleet were our due to severe force 8-9 gales.
Gales have been battering the Scottish Coasts for the past week keeping most of the fishing fleets in harbour. At St Monans Harbour huge waves crashed over the high harbours walls as the picture taken by our John Kinsman (who lives tthere) shows.
