In 2007 earthquake in Peru many families have been affected. After that they have started their own business, the first tilapia fish farm. They are successful now and the farming continues thriving. The earthquake hit family started their first tilapia fish farm in the rural town of San Jose de Los Molinos, in Ica region.
In their effort the support of the Ayuda en Acción Foundation and Decal NGO has added new dimension. The fish farm includes three ponds with a production capacity of 40,000 tilapias per year. Jose Yañez Sayritupac, who donated the land to build this fish farm, said he believes in the success of the project that “will improve the income and living standards of the local community.
It is informed that tilapia is the common name for nearly a hundred species from the tilapiine family, that inhabit a variety of fresh water habitats including shallow streams, ponds, rivers, lakes, and estuaries. These Peruvian families have survived with the help of fish farm and the growing demand of aquaculture products boost their business.
