A fire at the Deris SA processing plant at Chacabuco in Chile has seriously damaged production facilities for salmon and groundfish. No lives have been lost but the damage is estimated at $12 million.
The company will be working with Marine Harvest to process its salmon and Perquera Friosur, which had operated groundfish processing in Concepcion that was closed last year will be re-opening that factory to handle production.
Deris manages fishing companies Pesquera Friosur and Pesca Chile as well as salmon producer Salmones Friosur. Deris SA is 20% owned by Icelandic fishing company HB Grandi.
Pesquera Friosur runs two fresher trawlers and processing plants in Chacabuco and Concepcion, while Pesca Chile in Punta Arenas operates freezer vessels, longliners and fresher trawlers. Salmones Friosur processes between 15,000 and 20,000 tonnes of salmon annually.
