Fraserburgh will see a new vessel in its harbour, as Excel BF 110 begins fishing this February. Having been completed by Macduff Shipyards in the New Year, she can now proudly go on to demonstrate Macduff’s design capabilities.
The 18.95 metre LOA Excel will be utilising her new twin rig 160ft prawn scraper trawls from now on, having left Macduff Shipyards after successful fishing trials in the last week. Derek and John Watt commissioned the new Excel last year, and will now be skippering her. Excel will be operating through Caley Fisheries in Fraserburgh. The new vessel was built by Macduff Shipyards, and is similar in design to the Ellorah BF12. Ellorah was a new design from Macduff, a twin rig prawn/whitefish trawler, and Excel is a sister ship built to the same design. Excel has a beam of 7m and a depth to deck of 4m. Like Ellorah, Excel is built to fish trips of five to six days at a time, and can carry 19000lt of fuel and 7750lt of fresh water for each voyage.
Richard’s Dry Dock and Engineering Ltd constructed Excel’s hull in Great Yarmouth, and the hull was towed to Macduff for fitting out. Excel’s main engine was supplied by Macduff Diesels, and is a Mitsubishi S6A3MPTK, which is supplemented with two Mitsubishi auxiliary engines. Excel also has a Reintjes WAF274L reverse reduction gearbox with 7.043:1 reduction ratio, driving a 1800mm diameter 4 blade Kort propeller in a Kort XL fixed nozzle.
Excel will be using her twin rig 160ft prawn scraper trawls with a pair of Perfect B 78in trawl doors. Pisces Nets, Fraserburgh, made the nets and Excel will be using 60-fathom sweeps to spread the nets. Excel’s deck machinery includes a Macduff 3 drum trawl winch, a Gilson winch and a Thistle landing winch. Macduff supplied the fish handling system on Excel, while fishroom cooling and the flake ice maker were supplied by Premier Refrigeration.
