Recently Dutch Fishes has added new products available in the European supermarkets, such as smoked wild salmon and canned tuna, mackerel and salmon. It is said that each of Fishes product comes from a healthy fish population and is caught in an ecological sustainable way. Initiator and director of Fishes, Bart van Olphen, began in 2002 with a new type of fishing store. Embraced by fish lovers, soon more shops opened.
Growing awareness have make people understand about the survival of some fish species which is under threat. In the Netherlands supermarkets showed their interest in Fishes initially but then the rest of Europe followed. In the meantime Fishes became the market leader in MSC-certified products. Progress continues, and now through the cooperation with Fishes, KLM is the first MSC-certified airline in the world.
The Dutch Fishes has made tight effort for a more sustainable fish policy and were awarded with a Boston Seafood Champion Award, which Bart van Olphen received for being the most sustainable seafood entrepreneur in the world. According to Bart van Olphen catching fish from healthy fish populations, which result in high quality fish and that is how Fishes began. Fish should be tasty, fresh and sustainable.
It is told that Fishes closely cooperates with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and the World Wildlife Fund on helping companies with sustainable sourcing. Dutch Fishes pledge to serve with sustainable fish and fish products.
