Fishing is global and therefore so are its problems. Consequently, the solutions to these problems must be the same all over the world, meeting the needs and adapting to the specific areas in which they are implemented. All the countries which have an interest in this sector are concerned about the state of the oceans and about maintaining the fishing activity at a profitable level for companies and maintaining high prospects for future generations. Thus, the first World Summit on Fisheries Sustainability will be celebrated within this commitment to economic, social and environmental sustainability.
Less than a month until its celebration, participants from more than 20 different countries have already registered to take part in this meeting. In addition, the Fisheries Ministers invited by the Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs, who will meet on the 16th September to establish the guidelines to assure this fisheries sustainability objective, will also join the event. The wide range of nationalities attending the event shows the universal significance of fisheries and its problems.
The Summit will take place on the 15th September at the Parador de Baiona and opens the events to be held alongside the World Fishing Exhibition. The programme is divided into four big sections during which key issues to achieve ecological, biological, economic and social sustainability of fisheries will be tackled. The event will also rely on the participation of representatives from the fisheries industry. Among the registered participants we should highlight businessmen from Chile, New Zealand, Falkland Islands, Ghana or the United Kingdom, as well as researchers from Argentina, Portugal, Spain and Pakistan
