Although it was delivered back in February and has already completed a couple of trips, new trawler Berlin was officially christened last week at an event in Cuxhaven.
Built for Deutsche Fischfang-Union (DFFU) by Norwegian shipbuilder Vard, Berlin NC-107 represents a €65 million investment by DFFU and parent company Alda Seafood.
Dr. Margareta Büning-Fesel, President of the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL), swung the traditional bottle of champagne against the new vessel’s side in a ceremony also attended by Cuxhaven’s mayor Uwe Santjer, Swantje Nilsson from the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) and a gathering of staff, business partners, officials, officials and other stakeholders.
Berlin features advanced systems and is more energy-efficient than older vessels. In terms of production, it has a factory deck laid our for shrimp as well as whitefish processing, which is one of the most sophisticated of its kind, with a broad range of product options.
‘Alda Seafood and previously, Samherji, have owned DFFU since 1995. During this time, we have committed to building the company here in Cuxhaven,’ said DFFU director Baldvin Thorsteinsson.
‘We are mindful of the company’s history as one of the oldest fishing companies in Germany. DFFU is deeply rooted in the Cuxhaven community and currently employs several individuals who have worked for the company for decades. Our local suppliers have played a key role over the years, and I would like to say that here in Cuxhaven, we truly feel at home.’
