A Danish fishing vessel was lost on Saturday evening in a position 30 miles north of Skagen as it rapidly took on water. Two crew members were picked up by another boat fishing nearby.
Kim Vestergaard, owner of Grenaa trawler Christina Maiken AS-238 was alerted that the vessel’s EPIRB had been triggered and tried to call the boat. When there was no reply, he called partner vessel Bjarke AS-520, which reported that it was in visual contact with the Christina Maiken.
While they were talking, it became obvious that something was badly wrong on board Christina Maiken and its lights disappeared. Bjarke’s skipper set an immediate course for the stricken trawler’s position and was able to pick up both of the crew members.
The circumstances of the sinking remain unclear and will be the subject of an inquiry.
