As Cyclone Phyan hit India 26 fishing trawlers have gone missing from the South Gujarat and North Maharashtra coast. The authority has issued alert warning to Mumbai city as it receives heavy downpour. It is informed that the missing fishermen were from Mumbai’s Vasai and Palgarh creeks. They are caught in cyclone Phyan. Coast guard sources said that there is a possibility that hundreds of such trawlers are stranded.
According to the MET department Cyclone Phyan is about 100 kilometres away from the Western coast, as the deep depression at the Arabian Sea is moving northwestwards. The department further said that it is likely to intensify further into a cyclonic storm and make a landfall between Mahua in south Gujarat and Dahanu in north Maharashtra.
The MET department told that Mumbai and adjacent areas will face rough weather. It is said that squally winds speed reaching 90 kmph, are likely to commence along and off south Gujarat and Kerala coasts besides Lakshadweep, while it will hit Kerala, Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra coasts during the next 48 hours.
The department advised fishermen not to go into the sea along and off Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat coasts. The rains have already affected air traffic in Mumbai delaying flights by at least 30 to 50 minutes.
