Much of Queensland’s east coast fishing fleets are facing the wrath of fishery closures and more recently, inclement weather. A small fleet remains out of the category two cyclone’s reach in the far north above Princess Charlotte Bay, most fishing boats were secure in port. The weather in Townsville has been nasty enough to send everybody home.
Local fishermen said that even when the weather settles it’s doubtful how much fish will be returned to port before the high-demand period of Easter. There could be a bit of an issue in relation to fresh product in north Queensland for the Easter market. According to the fishermen there’s been virtually no product landed here since before Christmas.
The closure ended on the full moon, inauspicious for catching fish, and much of the fleet was waiting for better conditions when seas were whipped up by Cyclone Ului.
