As per the information available the State Government imposed the ban between Port Geographe and Black Point east of Augusta saying that it would resolve a long-standing conflict between recreational and commercial fishers. This decision is going to effect 11 commercial operators. Department of Fisheries Regional Manager Phil Shaw says they will be restricted to an area between Port Geographe and Tim’s Thicket south of Mandurah.
He also told that there was a similar resolution made last year where salmon fishing was banned between Port Geographe and Cape Naturaliste so it will basically mean there’ll be no beach based fishing in that area where there’s going to be a high level of recreational activity. Shaw says there has been some opposition to the ban but fishers will be compensated. The government has announced that the affected fishers would be compensated.
