The foundation of Vietnam Institute of Fisheries is on the way and thus uniting Research Institute for Aquaculture No.1, No.2, No.3 and Research Institute for Marine Fisheries. Besides that, the new foundation of Institute for Fisheries Veterinary and Research Institute for Mekong River Delta Fisheries under Vietnam Institute of Fisheries will be implemented.
The Prime Minister has recently approved Vietnam fisheries development strategy by 2020 which contains the establishment of Vietnam Institute of Fisheries as one of the main technological and scientific measures. Based on this strategy, by 2020, the fisheries sector will have been basically industrialized and modernized and continuously developed in comprehensive and sustainable direction into a major commodity production sector with appropriate structure and production organizational form; high productivity, quality and efficiency; prestigious trademark, high competitiveness and stable integration into the global economy.
It is fact that the seafood industry contributes 30-35 percent to GDP of agro-forestry-fishery sector; production value growth of fisheries sector is expected 8-10 percent per year. Seafood export turnover is expected to achieve 8-9 billion USD.
