Seafish announced that several fish and chip shops from each of the nineteen areas have been selected in the National Fish & Chip Shop of the Year competition 2008. This is an extra special year as the competition celebrates its 21st birthday. According to Seafish the lucky shops battled it out with all the others in the each area to make it through to the next round of the competition.
The competition is said very competitive and crucial. In the next stage there will be bid to win the national title involves a visit from a mystery judge who will assess the shops on product quality, customer service, hygiene, staff training and approaches to sustainable sourcing. In this round there will be 19 area winners who will be announced in October. After this hurdle the top 10 shops in Britain will progress to the grand final, which will held in London in 2009 and hosted by celebrity chef, Simon Rimmer.
This event is organized by Seafish, the authority on Seafood, the competition recognises the quality, value and choice offered by chippies up and down the UK and rewards the cream of the crop with the coveted title. Andy Gray, project manager and competition judge at Seafish, explained that this year the competition celebrates its 21st birthday – in this time the industry has gone from strength to strength with quality and choice having improved continuously.
