Unless new developments occur, HB Grandi’s pelagic vessels have finished their capelin season. They took their last catches yesterday with a combined catch for their final trips of 4900 tonnes. Of this, 3100 tonnes are being taken to Akranes for roe stripping and processing and 1800 tonnes are on their way to the same processing at Vopnafjördur.
According to Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson, head of the company’s pelagic division, Ingunn AK and Faxi RE are alongside at Akranes while Lundey NS and Víkingur AK are on their way to Vopnafjördur. Lundey is expected to dock after midnight while Víkingur is scheduled to arrive later.
HB Grandi had a quota of 20,500 tonnes for this short capelin season. Managing the fishing and taking purse seiner Víkingur out of retirement to fish alongside the regular pelagic vessels as soon as the fish were prime for roe stripping meant that the whole quota has been caught at a time when it can be used to produce frozen roe for Japanese and Eastern European markets.
