Senator Fabian Manning, on behalf of the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, announced today that C&W Industrial Fabrication of Bay Bulls, Newfoundland and Labrador, will build 15 new environmental response barges for the Canadian Coast Guard. The $2.5 million contract was awarded as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
According to Senator Manning Canada’s Economic Action Plan is creating jobs and opportunities across the country. He added that the government is pleased that its investment in the Coast Guard will create jobs, benefit workers in Bay Bulls and help save lives.
Senator Manning also said that this investment will enhance the Coast Guard’s ability to respond to spills that threaten our marine environment, which is a critical service for all Canadians. It is reported that the Canadian government is expected to invest $175 million in the Canadian Coast Guard to procure 68 new small vessels and 30 environmental barges, and to undertake major repair work on 40 of its largest vessels.
