A new research project has called for the standardisation of labels on fish, as it claims that current sustainability certifications are inconsistent and confuse consumers.
The Review of Fish Sustainability Information Schemes, conducted by independent research consultancy MRAG and the University of Stirling in Scotland, reviewed all types of seafood labels available to processors. Labels under review include the Marine Stewardship Council, Friends of the Sea, as well as advice on food to avoid given by organisations such as Greenpeace and the Marine Conservation Society.
