It is not the tuna fever or the last stocks out still Crescent City residents continue to buy fish off the docks. It is said that tuna season lasts two to three months, during which some Crescent City fishermen not only head far out to sea, they also sell it from their boats upon returning. Crescent City boats have to travel farthest from shore, sometimes up to 80 miles for tuna.
It is informed that much of the harvest from fishing out of Crescent City’s harbor does not go straight from the boat to the consumer; instead, processors and grocery stores get the catch first. So the chance to buy completely fresh seafood caught by local fishermen is limited to two fisheries — dungeness crab and albacore tuna.
Crescent City resident Lynda Knowles was planning on canning the more than 20 pounds she was buying. She opined that the only tuna she has ever tried is Starkist. According to other local fishermen, that would be like asking co-workers what they get paid. Matt Niedorf, the owner of the Josias, has been fishing salmon and tuna for the last five years. He was also selling off the dock Saturday.
