MHC and other salmon farming companies have launched a proactive communication campaign to bring salmon farming into the homes of British Columbians. Clare Backman, MHC’s Sustainability Director, said that compared to other food producing business, salmon farming is relatively new to most people. He added that communicating our business wasn’t top priority in the past, but today that’s changed.”
It is true that MHC is the largest producer of farm-raised salmon in BC, and is the biggest private employer in the areas where it operates. Backman said the effort result in a new interactive website, newspaper ads, video and television commercials. He told that the website is designed to be very interactive and to create constructive discussion about the business of salmon farming.
The website www.BCSalmonFacts.ca deals with the topics like sea lice, feed conversion, fish health and animal welfare. Ian Roberts, MHC’s Communication Manager, expressed that one part of his job is to take public on his farm tour to make them aware of the fish growing facts. He often heard from the visitors that they have learned things from this visit.
