It is noticed that Germany is hosting this year’s event, which runs until 25 September and gathers together some of the world’s most eminent marine scientists. As per the available information ICES is a vital partner in providing the Commission with the scientific advice needed in order to ensure that fisheries resources are harvested sustainably. The agenda of the conference includes a number of topics connected with the Commission’s Green Paper on reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP).
In his speech, Borg focuses on how the CFP reform will inevitably impact upon the role played by science in shaping policy. He is said to call on ICES to reflect on the best way in which the scientific advice provided to policy-makers can best serve the goals of a reformed CFP. It is said that the EU Commissioner will also be meeting the German Federal Minister of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, Ilse Aigner, who is also in charge of fisheries.
The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) coordinates and promotes marine research on oceanography, the marine environment, the marine ecosystem, and on living marine resources in the North Atlantic.
