Freezer trawler Blængur, owned by Icelandic fishing and processing company Síldarvinnslan, has arrived in Poland where it is undergoing a major refit.
The trawler is expected to spend twelve weeks in Poland where its accommodation and wheelhouse are to be refitted. Changes are to be made to the fishroom, with the discharging hatch relocated to the starboard side, and a new 270kW side thruster is being fitted. In addition, the ship is to be blasted and painted along with the usual routine maintenance being carried out. Once the refit has been completed in Poland, Blængur will steam to Akureyri in northern Iceland where staff at Slippurinn are preparing to fit the new factory deck equipment.
Blængur has had a long career. It was built in Spain in 1973 as one of a series of large stern trawlers for Icelandic operators, and it sailed as Ingólfur Arnarson. It was subsequently acquired by Ögurvík and operated as Freri RE-73 for some years, before being laid up and then sold to Síldarvinnslan last year where it was renamed Blængur NK-125. The 79 metre trawler underwent a rebuild in 1999 when it was lengthened and the original main engines were replaced with a 5000hp Wärtsilä.
