Britain once had a fleet that ranged across the North Atlantic. There are numerous reasons for the demise of the deep-sea fishing industry: from the fuel prices increases that hit everyone in the 1970s to the imposition of 200 mile limits that closed many fishing grounds, as well as indifference from successive governments and Britain’s accession to the European Union on terms that hardly favoured our fishing industry.
