JNCC and partners the Marine Management Organisation, Natural England, the National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations and Bangor University are launching a two-year project exploring participatory processes for establishing, evaluating and adapting fisheries management measures in MPAs that include sedimentary habitats as protected features.

Value of Ireland’s seafood hits €1.15 billion

Ireland’s seafood sector recorded its third consecutive year of growth in 2017, with its value up 6.4% on the previous year, to contribute €1.15 billion to Ireland’s GDP. This strong growth was driven by a 12% increase in net exports (€331m), a 4% increase in domestic consumption (€429m) and significant investment both private and public (€386m) leading to the value of trade surpassing €1 billion for the first time.

Groundfish production provides employment lifeline

Setting up production for groundfish in the north-eastern port of Vopnafjörður has provided a lifeline for employment in the region. HB Grandi is the remote port’s largest employer and Vopnafjörður with its proximity to the grounds where much of the pelagic fisheries take place was chosen as the focus for the company’s pelagic processing and fishmeal production. But these fisheries are highly seasonal, resulting in fluctuations in earnings. Adding groundfish processing to the profile has taken out the peaks and troughs, providing steady employment year-round.
