Armed forces in French Guiana have intercepted three vessels fishing illegally in only a few days.
Patrol vessel La Capricieuse intercepted two boats from Surinam, with fish on board and their nets still wet. The two were arrested and escorted to port, where 1600kg of fish and 16km of net were seized.
In the eastern area of the Guiana area, patrol cutter Organabo encountered an unregistered fishing vessel with a crew of three, who refused to communicate. The boat was taken to Degrad des Cannes and the crew handed over to the civil authorities there.
The authorities in French Guiana have no small task before them in patrolling 13,000 square kilometres of territory and 1100 kilometres of land borders, much of which is rainforest. The French armed forces frequently support fishery authorities in enforcement activities.
