According to the Interior Ministry of Morocco Algerian trawlers have encroached individually into Moroccan territorial waters in the north east of the kingdom before retreating in the past few weeks. In a statement released by the ministry states that over the weekend that these were considered as isolated cases and the Moroccan authorities preferred not to alert the Algerian authorities on the matter.
As per the released statement on Feb 21, another group of six trawlers entered the kingdom’s territorial waters for fishing purposes. in this case, the Foreign Ministry informed the Algerian Foreign Ministry on this development. After study the situation carefully the Moroccan authorities have noted that these incursions had unfortunately increased and on Feb 26, 27 and 28, more than 20 Algerian trawlers had penetrated by successive small groups Morocco’s territorial waters for illegal fishing activities.
As per the statement issued by the Interior Ministry of Morocco the Kingdom expresses hope that the Algerian authorities will undertake the appropriate measures to put an end to such activities made by Algerian fishing boats.
