The tenth Pêcheurs du Monde international film festival, a unique event dedicated to films about fishing around the world, is held in the French port city of Lorient next month, with more than 40 films screened over seven days.
This year’s films come from around the world; from Mexico to Senegal, from Portugal to India, from Canada to Brittany, from Japan to the Mediterranean. The festival takes place in Lorient, with more than 40 films screened at selected venues around the city between 19th and 25th March.
Set up ten years ago in Lorient by fishermen, directors and others with an interest in fishing and the sea, the Pêcheurs du Monde Festival has shown more than 400 films, inspiring exchanges and conversations between spectators, filmmakers and those with a special interest in the sea. It has become a showcase for the maritime identity of the Lorient region and for Brittany.
To celebrate this tenth anniversary, the Festival is bringing to life Maria do Mar, a masterpiece of Portuguese silent cinema by director Leitão de Barros. Pianist Roberto Tricari has created a score that dovetails with the film’s remarkable imagery.
Maria do Mar is the most important Portuguese feature film of the silent period. Shot in natural settings in the fishing village of Nazaré, the film relates the love of two young people whose families are enemies.
