A contract to build three new pelagic fishing vessels has been placed with the Yantar Shipyard at Kaliningrad in Russia, the first time for more than twenty years newbuilds of this type have been ordered from a Russian yard for a customer in Russia.
The three pelagic vessels have been designed with the involvement of Norwegian naval architect Skipskompetanse and the SK-3101R design is for a 50 metre vessel with a 12 metre beam and a main engine power of 2200 kW, capable of fishing with seine net, purse seine or trawl gear.
The customer for the three vessels is the V. Lenin Fishing Collective Farm in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
According to Eduard Yefimov at the Yantar Shipyard, the yard acted as technical adviser, selecting the designer and dealing with overseas suppliers, while Sberbank Leasing will co-finance the project.
The keel of the first vessel is to be laid in July this year and delivery is scheduled to take place in the second quarter of 2018.
The Yantar Shipyard was established in 1945 on the basis of the former Schichau Werft yard and specialises in military and commercial vessels. It has built 154 military ships and more than 500 merchant vessels. The Russian government holds a majority stake in the company via the state-owned United Shipbuilding Corporation.
