Ocean Trawlers Barents Sea cod and haddock fisheries obtain MSC-certification

The Barents Sea cod and haddock fisheries in cooperation with Ocean Trawlers Group[1] were today certified as sustainable under the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) [2] environmental standard for sustainable and well managed fisheries. Around 87 000 metric tonnes of Russian cod and 34 000 metric tonnes of Russian haddock will now be eligible to display the blue MSC ecolabel in the market place.

Mackerel talks

A third round of talks between the EU, Norway, Iceland and the Faroe Islands, with the aim of securing a new international agreement on mackerel fishing quotas, starts in Norway tomorrow. Scottish Government officials are taking part in the negotiations.

Capelin could start next month

The results of work by the Marine Research Institute between 24th September and 8th November indicates a capelin spawning stock of 630,000 tonnes. The Institute has recommended an initial quota of 200,000 tonnes, on the principle that the spawning stock needs to be a minimum of 400,000 tonnes.
