A meeting at the European Commission today has begun the process of applying sanctions to Iceland, following the commitment made in December by Commissioner Maria Damanaki to address continued overfishing of the shared mackerel fishery.

Fish discards

Fisheries Secretary Richard Lochhead has welcomed the European Fisheries Commissioner's pledge to eliminate the "scandalous waste" of discards. However, he pointed out that Europe missed a major opportunity to address the issue head on at last month's critical fisheries negotiations.

The sustainability of the Norwegian aquaculture industry between Rogaland and Troms is being challenged by infection pressure of sea lice on wild salmonids and the possible genetic impact of escaped salmon. However, it is low likelihood of eutrofication and organic overload on a regional scale.

Macrel Boosts Pelagic Sector

In 2010, exports of mackerel totalled NOK 3.0 billion, an increase of NOK 776 million or 36% compared to 2009. Exports of mackerel from Norway have never before reached such values. Exports of herring were down by 9% to NOK 3.7 billion, while exports of capelin fell by 15% to NOK 487 million, according to the latest figures from the Norwegian Seafood Export Council.

Conditions uncertain for capelin

A 600 tonne catch that Faxi RE docked with at Vopnafjördur on Tuesday night is now being landed and according to skipper Albert Sveinsson, these fish were caught north of Langanes. Faxi had bad weather for the whole trip and he said that with such difficult seas, conditions were bordering on being too rough to fish.
