British Columbia pink salmon fisheries awarded MSC certification

The independent certification body, Moody Marine Limited, has awarded Marine Stewardship Council certification to three British Columbia pink (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) salmon fisheries that were entered into assessment by the Canadian Pacific Sustainable Fisheries Society. Certification to the MSC standard means the fisheries have been found to be sustainable and well-managed following a rigorous assessment that included an open, transparent process and scientific peer review. With certification, the fisheries are now eligible to display the MSC ecolabel.

Dutch suspended culture mussel fishery crowned sustainable

“Zeeuwse mosselen” - mussels from the Dutch province of Zeeland, a very popular and typical Dutch specialty seafood product - are now eligible to bear the MSC ecolabel: The Dutch Association of Suspended Culture Mussel Farmers (in Dutch: Zeeuwse Hangcultuurkwekers) has been certified to the Marine Stewardship Council standard for sustainable and well-managed fisheries. The association has been working towards MSC certification for almost one and a half years. The assessment was carried out by independent certifier SGS Nederland B.V.

These are the best trawl doors I’ve ever had!!!

The Injector Shark trawl door is invading the Canadian market. Vónin Canada has for the last couple of weeks delivered 8 sets of Injector Shark trawl doors. 7 of the these have been for the inshore trawlers with sizes ranging from 3,8m2 and up to 4m2. A set of 11m2 has also been delivered to one of the larger offshore vessels. Sales manager Jan Klein at Vónin Canada says that the demand for these doors is massive and the feedback is very positive.

Action on mackerel stocks

A public rebuke of the mackerel fishing practices of Iceland and the Faroes has been made by the European Commission and Norway in a joint statement that they are 'deeply concerned about the irresponsible actions of Faroe Islands and Iceland in setting excessive unilateral quotas for their 2011 mackerel fisheries'.

Warmer water – more mackerel

As the sea temperature rises east of Iceland, so it seems that the mackerel are increasingly abundant. Arnthór Hjörleifsson, skipper of HB Grandi’s pelagic vessel Lundey NS, says that there have been some significant changes in the last few days and the water temperature has risen by 2.5°C in a fairly short time.
