European Commission proposal on 2012 Baltic TACs announced

Today, the European Commission released its proposal on fishing opportunities in the Baltic Sea for 2012. The Commission states that the overall objective of the proposal is to make fisheries in the Baltic Sea environmentally and economically sustainable by following the recommendations of scientists. Increases in TACs for both cod stocks are therefore suggested, following the rules stipulated in the management plan. The Commission is also proposing to increase the TACs for Western and Gulf of Bothnia herring. Substantial cuts are being proposed for salmon, Riga and central herring, sprat and plaice.

Fisheries: Commission proposes fishing opportunities in the Baltic Sea for 2012

The European Commission today tabled its proposal on fishing opportunities in the Baltic Sea for 2012. Based on scientific advice, the Commission proposes to increase TACs (total allowable catches) for both stocks of Baltic cod as well as for two stocks of herring (Western and the Gulf of Bothnia). Decreases for the remaining stocks, in particular salmon, are deemed necessary, given the poor state of the fish stocks in question. The Commission also proposes to limit the number of days at sea for fishing vessels, to the levels established last year. The overall aim of the proposals is to make fisheries in the Baltic Sea environmentally and economically sustainable by following the recommendations of scientists.

Commissioner Maria Damanaki to promote the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy in Ireland

Maria Damanaki, Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, will visit Dublin and Galway from 22 to 23 September 2011 to present and discuss with Irish stakeholders the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), proposed by the Commission in July.

The idea of capping effort in the UK crab and lobster fisheries has been in circulation for many years without making any significant headway. The scientific argument for a cap is that whilst we don’t know with any degree of precision how close we are to the tipping point, the continuous expansion in fishing effort in the crab and lobster fisheries (measured in terms of the increasing number of pots in the water) could seriously jeopardise stocks if the current favourable environmental conditions are discontinued.

Renewal of Aker Seafoods trawler fleet getting a powerful boost

On September 19th, 2011 Aker Seafoods concluded an agreement with STX OSV AS to build three modern trawlers. The trawlers will have a new hull shape, reduced fuel consumption and an increased catch capacity. Aker Seafoods is taking an important step in the direction towards a more environmental-friendly and profitable white fish catch, according to the company.
