Damen Shipyards Galati is building the Ngola Kiluange, a Fishery Inspection Surveillance Vessel (FISV) 6210, for the Angolan Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries. With another two ships under construction, the Angolan government is set to strengthen its knowledge of and control over its rich fishing grounds.

Well managed Fisheries in Icelandic Waters

Certification of Fisheries based on the FAO-ISO model Responsible management of fisheries is of fundamental importance to Iceland as fisheries are one of the main pillars of the Icelandic economy. Icelanders have structured a fisheries management system to ensure sustainable use of marine resources. Germany is in the forefront in promoting sustainable use of natural resources and it is therefore natural to present the Iceland Responsible Fisheries programme to the German seafood industry at the Fish International 2012 exhibition in Bremen.

Flatfish Ltd to bring first MSC certified plaice to UK market

Flatfish Limited, Grimsby has worked together with Jubilee Company Limited (vessel owners and agents) and Grimsby Fish Market to secure Marine Stewardship Council certification for the ‘chain of custody’ of North Sea Plaice. Flatfish plans to supply MSC certified plaice to UK retailers, foodservice and the fish and chip industry from April 2012. This will be the first MSC certified plaice in the UK retail market.

Basque company Pescafria-Pesquera Rodríguez SA first Spanish fishery to obtain MSC certification for sustainable fishing

The Marine Stewardship Council announced that Pescafria-Pesquera Rodríguez has been awarded MSC sustainable fishing certification, making PESCAFRIA the first Spanish fishery and the first European Union Barents Sea cod fishery to be awarded this distinction. The announcement was made at a press conference attended by Basque government representatives Jon Azkue, Deputy Regional Minister for Fisheries and the Food Industry, and Jokin Díaz, Director for Fisheries and Aquaculture; Pescafria Manager Francisco Rodríguez; MSC Regional Director for Europe Nicolas Guichoux, and Laura Rodríguez, MSC Spain and Portugal Country Manager.

Capelin news at winter festival

‘It was perfect in every way. We dropped right down on the capelin mark exactly where we had been told it would be and didn’t need to spend any time searching. We shot first on Tuesday afternoon and managed to fill the purse seine. That was around 1400 tonnes of good-sized, quality capelin, although there was some feed in it so it wasn’t right for freezing,’ said Gudmundur Hafsteinsson, first mate on Víkingur AK.
