Scottish Pelagic Fish Group commits to sustainable future

While much work still remains to be done, Scottish Pelagic Sustainability Group (SPSG) chairman John Goodlad says the Group should take considerable pride in its achievements so far and the Scottish pelagic sector can look to the future with confidence. SPSG, which represents those involved in the catching, processing and marketing of herring, mackerel and blue whiting, says it is committed to a sustainable future by continuing to develop its programme of responsible fishing initiatives.

Pew’s Baltic spin

Europêche, the leading trade body representing the fishing industry in Europe, has hit back at claims in an article published in the Guardian on Thursday 10th of March that states that a leaked European Commission plan concerning the Baltic Sea would open the gates to overfishing. The article claims that that cod in the Baltic may become extinct and that some fish stocks are in such a poor condition that scientists are even unable to carry out a proper evaluation.

Tuna deadline tomorrow

Norway’s Ministry of Fisheries has set a deadline of tomorrow, 14th of March, for applications to take part in a trial bluefin fishery this year. Norway has a 43.71 tonne bluefin quota allocated by ICCAT. The Ministry is seeking one purse seiner and one longliner to take part in trials.

Quin-Sea sale approved

The sale of Quin-Sea Fisheries to Royal Greenland has been approved by the government of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Fish Processing Licensing Board recommended that the take-over could go ahead and this has been accepted by Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Steve Crocker.
