According to the Danish Pelagic PO, blue whiting has proved to be an increasingly important resource for Denmark’s fishmeal sector. This year Danish pelagic vessels have landed 81,000 tonnes of blue whiting valued at DKK132.4 million (€17.80 million) compared to 61,000 tonnes last year worth DKK83.50 million (€11.20 million) last year.
Scottish fishing and processing businesses are set to benefit from £6.9 million in funding as the sixth round of the European and Maritime Fisheries Fund (EMFF) will award grants to 107 projects across Scotland. The European Commission is proposing improvements to modernise and simplify the way in which fishing rules are monitored and complied with in the EU, stating that effective control is key to ensuring that the EU's fisheries are sustainably managed, in turn guaranteeing the long-term viability of EU fisheries.
