Scottish Pelagic Sustainability Group’s Atlanto Scandian herring fishery gains MSC ecolabel certification

The Scottish Pelagic Sustainability Group’s (SPSG) Atlanto-Scandian herring fishery has been certified as a sustainable and well-managed fishery under the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) standard. Herring taken from this fishery are now eligible to bear the MSC eco label. The assessment was carried out by independent certifier Food Certification International.

CITES Fails to Protect Atlantic Bluefin Tuna

Susan Lieberman, director of international policy for the Pew Environment Group, issued the following statement today in response to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) committee vote on Monaco’s proposal to prohibit international trade of Atlantic bluefin tuna. The proposal failed by a vote of 20 for, 68 against, and 30 abstentions.

Fishing must not be neglected in development of integrated maritime policy for North Sea

Bertie Armstrong, the chief executive of the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation, will today (17 March) tell a major conference on the future management of marine resources in the North Sea that the primary and sustainable harvesting of seafood must be considered in balance with the activities of other stakeholders such a the oil, gas and renewable energy sectors.
