The new regime will commence on 1st of February but there are still many unresolved issues, not least the basic question of relevance to vessels affected by the EU cod recovery plan – how many days will each vessel be allowed to fish over the next 12 months?
The first of a series of meetings on the shape and role of the new Marine Management Organisation, was held recently in Reading – almost as far from the sea as it is possible to reach in England. When it becomes active in 2010 the MMO will absorb the Marine Fisheries Agency, oversee the replacements for sea-fisheries committees, and be the main instrument for marine spatial planning, including the designation of marine conservation zones.
